I use 3 mixes for thois pan. To do a half and half, you'd have to use four and have some batter leftover (which you could use for cupcakes or something). I use Duncan Hines mixes and usually get 4.5-5 cups of batter per mix.
Hope that helps,
Angela

The Wilton 12x18 pan takes 14 cups of cake batter. Here is the reference chart that is very useful from the Wilton site
http://www.wilton.com/cake/cakeprep/baking/times/party_2inch.cfm
So, according to this chart, you will need 3 cake mixes, or to do half and half, 4 cake mixes with some batter left over as Angela indicated.
I read somewhere on here that you can use 2 mixes for the 12x18 pan. I tried it and it worked great for me. Also you don't have to worry about the left over batter. Just MHO though. ![]()
I've used two cake mixes in the 12X18 before too. It's acceptable, but it isn't a full 2" high. So, it really depends on how high you want you layers to be. If it's going to be a single layer cake, I would go with the three cake mixes, so the cake rises to the top of the pan.
How about two cake mixes using the extender recipe?
