Do I need to mix it with alcohol or is that just for luster dust?? I'd rather paint this small accent red than try to get the fondant red, amen!!

I used gel to paint my tiger cake and I just mixed it with water until it was the right consistency, however it did take awhile to dry to the touch. If you want it to dry quicker I would recommend mixing it with vodka.

uh, can anything other than vodka be used. I don't want alcohol in my house, no matter the purpose. Any ideas??? Can it just be used straight?? Do you know how long it takes fondant to dry?

i have painted fondant directly with the gel (didn't mix with water)and it came out fine. i didn't do a huge area so that is something to factor in. I am not sure the exact time it takes to dry but i don't remeber it being more than an hour
hope tha t helps

To paint I use the gel with lemon essence or orange essence, which has 85% alcohol. The alcohol will evaporate. Most colours are quickly dry less (than 5 minutes), except red icon_sad.gif! Also with big area you will get strikes(?). HTH.

I forgot to ask, what gel do you have? What brand?

Yes, you can use lemon extract. It works great and smells good, too. It dries faster than just using the straight gel colors. Start with a light touch, you can always go back over it if you have to. If you get the fondant too wet, it gets gummy.

Good luck.

I use the wilton brand, and the color IS red that I need. It's not a large area. Is wilton vanilla extract something I could mix it with, does it have enough alcohol?

I'm not sure that vanilla extract would work. I have never seen people suggest that here. Usually lemon extract is suggested.

Why does red take longer to dry. I painted with just the gel, nothing mixed to it because I did have the stuff and didn't want to to drag the kids, plus I'm still baking cakes. So, how long do you think it will take to dry?? Would it help to put a fan on it??

This is interesting, I tried it and I don't think it ever dried when I painted with just the gel. Perhaps I did it too much.

I paint straight out of the bottle or I use clear vanilla extract.

Yes, vanilla does work quite well. Dries faster than water too...kind of have to work fast.
