I'm just so excited! I put it off for so long because I wasn't legit. I finally plunked down the money for an honest-to-goodness web site with my own domain name (had a googlepage for a month or so prior,) I have business cards, and my site is finally up and running after a lot of frustration.

www.townlakecakes.com

While any and all positive comments are naturally welcome icon_biggrin.gif I'm really looking for some honest feedback. I realize that things are not perfect - call it sort of a rough draft - but I'd really like to know what the cake folks think. DH and friends can only be *so* helpful. icon_wink.gif

TIA

First, I love that cake on your homepage, it just feels so comforting to me.
Second, I love your slogan! That is a great play on your name.

Now for a couple of suggestions.
Pricing page: you have listed out 6" (10) $18, Now I being a decorator know that the (10) is servings, but someone who doesn't know cakes most likely would not. I would suggest doing something along the following lines 6" Serves 10 $18.00 Or 6" $18.00 Serves 10

When you have serving sizes on a price list make sure you list what your serving sizes are! There are so many people who thing a 4"x4"x4" slice is a serving.

Also are your round and square cakes single layer or double layer?

These are just a couple of things that popped out at me right away. I will probably take a look a little bit later but thought I might toss those out there for you to think about.

Alimonkey, I love your website. I think it'awesome the way you played on your TLC name....what a neat idea. All your pics looked wonderful.
A girlfriend of mine is working on a website for my Catering/Cake Decorating business and she suggested for me NOT to include prices on the site because your email address is right there for serious customers to reply to to inquire about price...and also prices will change, requiring update....just something to think about. icon_smile.gif

Your homepage cake looks soooo yummy! The background is light, neutral, and easy to look at, which makes the wording easy to read. Looks good!

I TOTALLY disagree with this. The archaic thinking of "tease them with info and I'll snag 'em with the sales pitch when they call" went out when the internet came in. Brides are surfing the 'net looking for information ..... pricing information. They tell me that if the website has no pricing, they are moving on to the next one.

You are not getting the opportunity to talk pricing because they are not going to contact you.

My pricing is a pre-qualifier. If they see the pricing and it's in their budget then they contact me and we are halfway there. If it's out of their budget, then they don't call me and waste my time.

THis thread .... http://forum.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-414553-husband.html+bought+truck ... tells the story of how my husband bought a truck ... via the internet .... and he refused to contact any dealership that tried to force him to contact them for pricing.

Your website is beautiful! Congratulations! I used to live in Austin, and I love the name of your business and the play on words. You are right! Everyone does need a little TLC!

The only comment I have is that I would love to see more pictures of your work!

Your prices are SO reasonable! You will be very busy in Austin!

Best wishes for a booming business!

I think it is very nice. Only two suggestions, a way to click on your photos and enlarge. And to have categories in your gallery, Weddings, Birthdays, Baby Showers, etc.

I for one am an internet shopper. I'm not going to call and get prices. I want them right there where I can see them. I think a lot of people are like that these days, thanks to the internet. If a company doesn't have prices, I'm not going to call and get prices unless I absolutely can't that product anywhere else. Call it lazy if you want, but I want to know all the info up front.

If you don't want to list too many prices, put a "Cakes start at $2.00 per person and go up from there depending upon complexity of design" kind of statement, but make sure you put a serving size for each cake so that they can visualize in their head what size cake they can get and what it might look like. That's what I would do anyway. icon_smile.gif

Great wallpaper...great cake on home page....
easy to use....love the play on words for TLC...

definitely keep the prices...I HATE when I want to know a price and it's not available for me.

The only thing is that from the homepage all the links worked, but from the gallery page, the pricing link and the home link didn't work.

Check the links...otherwise it's great...oh yeah....add more photos when you get a chance...but unless you make them into thumbnails, I don't think you need to click on them to make them bigger....you can see them just fine IMO.

I'm the same way about pricing. If I can't find it on a website, I'll keep looking for a site that has it. I briefly considered not putting pricing but just couldn't think of a single reason not to. Honestly, I'm such a wuss when it comes to talking about money that it's a relief to half the basics taken care of.

Thanks for all the compliments everybody. I'm pretty happy with the general look of my site. I didn't want it too crazy - subtle but elegant, not too plain.

I do have a lot more cake photos, but I'm in the process of photoshopping them all to get rid of background clutter. There are some I won't be posting though just because I don't feel they're the best representation of my work.
Once I have more photos I will make separate galleries for different types of cake, but until then I'm just going to go with a single gallery page. Also, I may put thumbnails and links to larger photos. Not sure yet.

Leily - I will definitely make those changes to my pricing page.

Irene - not sure what the issue is with the links, and I'm no HTML pro. I tried it after I saw your post and didn't have any problem at all. My sister also said she got an error message when she clicked the Home button from the home page. I tried that too and after trying it 10 times, it only went to a blank page the 2nd time.

Anyway, thanks again for all the compliments. I'm glad to have such a well-liked cake I'm able to use for the home page.

it is very pretty! I would just suggest adding more pics. I agree it is nice to have prices. I dont put mine on my webpage as I dont have a legit business and do not feel comfortable. I mainly use it to show people what I can do. But it is a lot easier if people can generally see how much it is going to cost, so they dont waste anyone's time.

I also like your TLC motto!

everything worked for me. i love it its simple yet it gets your attention. i think if you add more pics i would put them in their own categories maybe not more links but once you click on the gallery have a header that says wedding then have all those pics then grooms cakes then have those. you get the idea.
