Thanks for all the help you guys gave me with my jersey cake. It turned out really well and he was really impressed. I was working on it until the last minute so I didn't get a chance to take a pic though.

Anyway, now I need some tips for another cake. I am going to a Barbecue this weekend and I'm thinking about making a cake for that just for fun. I was thinking about making a big cake that looks like a hamburger or little cupcakes that look like hamburgers. Or a cake that looks like a barbecue. I was also thinking about doing something that just looks summery and pretty but couldn't really decide on an image. I want it to be something that looks really nice, but also something that people will eat.

I was wondering whether, in your experience, people are reluctant to eat cake/cupcakes that look like some other type of food - like hamburgers.

Also, just any kind of general advice you can give me on what type of cake would be fun for a barbecue would be appreciated. There are going to be guys and girls there and they will range in age from about 22 to late 30s. Thanks a lot. It's going to be a very casual kind of thing. I think there will be about 10-20 people there (but I don't mind making a cake that is big enough to feed more than that)

How about a "big ol slice of watermelon" icon_biggrin.gif

Make a 10 round, cut it in half and stack it.
There are a couple of cute ones in the gallery

you could even use chocolate chips for th seeds.
It's just me but I really don't like balck icing on cakes.

As long as people know it is cake, they will eat it!! LOL!

I think cupcakes might possibly be better for a bbq, unless you definitely separate the dinner from the dessert, and I will tell you why...

I made a cake for our block party (it was more like a potluck I guess than a bbq). Anyway I was worried that no one would eat the cake because you have to cut it up and stuff. Just easier to grab cupcake or cookie or whatever. So that is part of the reason. But what really happened was I spent hours making this cake for the block party..sort of hoping to show off my skills, maybe get some jobs. Anyway I set it down on the table and like 12 seconds later the neighbor boys says "can someone help me with a piece of cake?" I cant very well tell him no! So it didnt really get seen very well before it was all chopped up. I guess I would rather have it that way than not eaten at all! LOL

I think that is why creative cupcakes might be a better choice!

I wouldn't go with the food thing....they already have lots of food. I would go with a western theme..to tie in with the barbecue. I have seen some real cute cakes on here with denim, rope borders and paisley print.

I made a grill with "hot dogs and hamburgers" for a memorial day cookout. It was a big hit. It's in my photos if you want to see it. It was nice that I made the grill "lid" as a separate cake too. We were able to cut that one first and leave the "grill" longer for everyone to see before it had to be cut as well. Good luck coming up with the perfect idea.

SaraO:
If you're interested in a Paisley design like what BCJean said, I made a cake like it last weekend and you can use it for ideas if you would like:

I would go for the cheese burger cupcakes.......I'm going to be giving them a try in a couple of weeks for a football bbq.
Easy to pick up and go.

Good luck

I've made the cheeseburger cupcakes and they were quick and easy.
I was able to make most of the 'cheeseburger' parts in advance to save on time.
Have fun!

Or icon_eek.gif How about a Flip Flop cake.... I have one in my photos. That would make a cute bbq cake.

I did exactly what you are talking about the big burger and then a bunch of little burgers I actually used my muffin top pan to make my little burgers and they were the biggest hit people just loved them. and I personally think they are one of the easierst cakes to make.
