I was asked to do a bridal shower cake for November. It's for a friend of a friend and I'm going to be given free reign (love those kinds of cakes!!). The colors are red & green since the wedding is around Christmas. So, my first thought is something elegant like Ginger08's pinecone cake, but I'd like it to be edible. Those are the shape of pinecone we mostly have here - the round ones. Soo, any help on how to do this would be appreciated. I'd also like to make pine needles, but I"m not sure what they should be made of?

You could maybe make pine needles out of royal icing - you could just pipe some line and then let it dry, pick them up and place them on the cake. For pine trees, you could view the article here at CC on making trees- you use an ice cream cone and they come out pretty good. As for pinecones, I'm not sure.....

form gumpaste into a pinecone shape. starting at the wide end, use scissors to snip the little "v" shapes around and around the cone until you get to the top. Use yr fingers to shape the snipped bits slightly if necessary. Let dry. After it is dry, use a couple of shades of brown pastel chalk or luster dust to paint the pinecone. I would start with a yellowish gumpaste, since the inside of the bits are slightly lighter sometimes.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry - I didnt' get notified there were responses... Royal probably would be much easier for the needles! I wouldn't have thought of yellow for the pine cone.

There is a very tasty way of making pinecones, it's in Colette's Christmas book. Condensed version: make a large cone out of marzipan and insert toothpick. Poke sliced almonds in it, starting at top and going down. Dip entire thing in chocolate. Let set. Ready to use.
