This is probably a stupid question, but what the heck!! What coloring do you use for airbrushing? We have absolutely no cake decorating stores (at least none that I'm aware of) here except for Michaels and Hobby Lobby, SO do I use Wilton colors mixed with something for the airbrush??

You have to buy airbrush coloring. I dont have any places around here either so I get my stuff online. If you have luster dust or some kind of fine powder dust you can use it mixed with extract or vodka. But you dont want to use a Wilton gel because it will get clogged.

I heard somewhere that the wilton gels can clog the gun. I order my airbrush liquids from sugarcraft. You can also get it from here.

definately cnnot use regular coloring! that could ruin the airbrush. i dont know of any stores themselves that sell them. You can buy them online at several places. Kopykake.com is the main one that comes to mind

Even though it is not recommended, in an emergency situation, you can mix your own airbrush color. I have done this lots of times with no damage to my airbrush. Use 1 part gel color and 4 parts water. Make sure the gel gets completely dissolved. I always clean my airbrush really good before putting away also. A real good cleaner is denture cleaner. Just soak the airbrush in the cleaner for about 30 minutes, spray some of the cleaner through the airbrush, rinse, let dry, and put away.

Not that you can find powdered color at Michael's or Hobby Lobby, but you can mix those with vodka for airbrush. Any food coloring containing glycerin will clog it up.

Also, I couldn't believe that the home of the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show doesn't have a cake supply shop. Went online and found this one:

SONYA'S CAKE DECORATING & CANDY MAKING SUPPLIES   Ph: 918/747-2266
3735 S. HARVARD AVE.

TULSA, OK 74135
COMPLETE LINE OF CAKE&CANDY SUPPLIES ALL OCCASIONS

I guess they may be out of business, but it's worth a call!

Good luck,

I too just bought an air brush but I can't find the colors anywhere near me. I am so thankfull to CCers for all thier tips. I was wondering if I could dilute my gels and use those in a pinch.

Hi, I purchase my airbrush colors from www.outoftheoven.com. It's a great place to purchase things and Xia the owner is awesome. Visit the site and let her know I sent you.

I feel your pain! I'm in Tulsa and you're right, not a single local cake decorating supply store anywhere in the area. The place posted in a previous post is no longer in business. The prices at Michael's and Hobby Lobby are outrageous and they carry very limited supplies.

I bought a ton of supplies on my last trip to OKC, they have several stores there, but other than that, I'm afraid we're stuck with buying online for supplies.

Intotheoven is a great place to shop online. I've placed several orders with them. I've posted this on another thread, but be sure and register on their forum and you'll find a discount code. Their prices are very good and they ship really quickly.

Years ago I was told we could mix paste food colors with glycerin to use in an airbrush, but I never tried it so I don't know if it would work or not.

Thanks for all of your help!

justme50: I was told by my Wilton instructor that there is a bakery around the 58th & Garnett area that expanded to carry hard to find cake decorating supplies...... I have absolutely no idea what it's called and can't seem to locate it. Do you know of any bakeries in that area? (Besides Merritt's of course)

No, I don't. I looked through the phone book and couldn't find any bakery listed in that area. There is Ann's Bakery, but neither location is near that side of town. Merritts is at 71st and Garnett, but I go there quite often and they don't carry any supplies.

Next time I'm in that part of town, I'll look around. If you find out what the name of it is, please let me know. There are times I just can't wait for an order to come in and it sure would be nice to have a place close by.

Years ago, we had a Wilton shop over in the Jenks area, but they closed a long, long time ago.
