If you are like me and turned away from awesome-sounding recipes in the past because they had alcohol as an ingredient, then I have a great resource for you! I was SO happy to find this because I want to make Toba Garratt's Chocolate Buttercream (as was recommended in another thread here). When I saw that it had alcohol as an ingredient, I was disappointed! However...not anymore! I found the below site and am a happy camper now. Maybe you can use this info too?

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. There are times when I won't make something because I don't like the taste of the alcohol that is used. This will help me a lot.

I also some people who wouldn't eat anything made with alcohol so when I bake for them this would be super to have.

I've printed it out and added to my "book" of CC info.

do you use real vanilla or artificial then? Vanilla extract (the real stuff) contains alcohol too.

Thanks a lot! We don't drink so I don't buy alcohol. I don't want it in my house even if it's just for cooking. I wouldn't want my kids seeing it and I wouldn't feel right buying it. I don't have a problem with vanilla though, because its purpose is baking not drinking!

Thanks for sharing. I usually pass on recipes with alcohol as an ingredient. I doesn't look good somebody to see the pastor's wife buying alcohol. icon_rolleyes.gif

For anyone for which this is an issue:

There are REAL vanillas that are not alcohol based. I get one called "Cookbook Vanilla" at Trader Joe's, and you use the same quantity as you do for regular vanilla extract.

It's a bit more expensive, but for things that don't get cooked (like buttercream), I find it tastes a little better.

Oh my gosh, Redpanda! I loved Trader Joe's. This is one of the many stores I miss in California.

I haven't seen that cookbook vanila before - the only part that would confuse me is I would swear that it had to contain a minimum % of alcohol to be labeled as vanilla extract per the FDA. Regardless, here is a site those of you who do not like alcohol might find niteresting - it is a list of flavoring substitutes.

That site also suggests Trader Joe's Cookbook Vanilla, so with them promoting alcohol-free flavorings, it must be truly alcohol free. This is good to know. Thanks much!

I think that the way they handle this is that they don't actually call it "extract". If I remember correctly, it is glycerine-based instead of alcohol.

I had to be really careful for a while, because a close family member was taking a medication that has a similar effect to Antabuse--even the tiniest amount of alcohol would cause serious nausea. icon_eek.gif

First I would like to thank RitzyFritz and jmt1714 for the links. thumbs_up.gif I also do not like to make recipes with alcohol and look for substitutes.

However, I did a search for Cookbook Vanilla and couldn't find it and the only Trader Joe's is on the opposite side of the country. icon_cry.gif Does anyone know of an internet business that sells it??

I would so much prefer to use non alcohol flavoring when possible.

TIA!!

I did a Google search for "nonalcohol vanilla" and came up with several hits, including this one: http://www.theposter.com/vanillaextracts.html (it is the last one listed on the page).

I know that natural food stores (Wild Oats, Whole Foods, Lassen's) carry the nonalcohol flavors, too.

One warning--the Cookbook Vanilla definitely colors the icing. I guess regular vanilla probably does too, but I am not positive that the "violet trick" will counteract it.
