I made some this past weekend. I did it two ways b/c I've never done them before and I was afraid they would break. The first way was to mix 1 tsp. gum tragacanth (or gum-tex, tylose would probably work, too) with 1 lb fondant to make modeling paste. I rolled out a long rope (a clay gun would have been perfect!) and shaped my numbers. I took some decent gauge wire and bend a tiny hook at the end and inserted it into the bottom of the number. I placed them on some styrofoam and put them into an unheated oven with the light on. I was concerned about having enough support on the wire so as an afterthought when they were dry I piped a small glob of royal icing where the wire went into the number. Don't know if that was neccessary or not. The next one I did, I poked the hole for the wire, piped an even smaller amount of royal and inserted the wire. It looked nicer. Not knowing how these would hold up, I also piped some extras out of royal icing onto parchment paper and popped those into the cold oven as well. When I was inserting them onto my cake I pressed too hard on the modeling paste one inthe wrong spot and it broke, so I ended up having to use the royal icing and was more careful when I inserted that one. If you look at my pictures, you'll see mine on the pink cake.
