I recently stumbled across this site and got addicted! (Lol) I would like to make my sons theyre 1st birthday cake. I will be attempting to make them a Backyardigans cake. I'd Like it to be 2 or 3 tiers . Only problem is ... Ive never done this before. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on what to use i.e. regular fondant, satin ice,e.t.c . Also if theyre are any books or dvds that could help with this. I have 2 months to practice and get it right. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
I'm pretty new at making cakes too. I got hooked on it b/c I wanted to make my daughters 1st b-day cake. I have bought a few of the wilton books from michaels but I have learned most of what I know from here. Good luck. I made my daughters 1st b-day cake 2 weeks ago, and it turned out great. I can't wait to see your finished cake. Sorry I'm still learning, I don't really have any advice to give you.
If you don't have any experience at all I would see if you could find a Wilton class to take at your local Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. Class 1 is very informative on the basics. If you can't take the class I would recommend at least buying the books and going through them. Lots of tips/technicques on teh basics in there.
Did you have any plan for the cake yet? Like what you want it to look like? If you don't mind doing real basic I know Wilton carries a Pablo cake pan and those are great starting points for beginner decorators. Just the good old star tip ![]()
Are you wanting it to have actual tiers (posts) in it, or just like a layered cake? I've got expirecnce with both types! Making a wedding cake you both, each layer is 2 layers, and then they are on cake plates, that have the cake posts holding each 2 layer cakes.
If your doing just layers, I would take your icing all the way around the edge and then fill the top of the bottom layer with a light coat of icing (I use mainly the buttercream), then slide the top layer on top of it, the icing is what holds the layers together. Then just icing as you wish too.
If your doing actual tiers I'd go with making the 2 layer cakes the same size pan for each 2 layers, and then the next layer somewhat smaller. Like on wedding cakes. Then when once you've decorated each layer how you wish.
I found it easier to take the top layer and gently set the plate actually on top of the bottom layer, so it puts an imprint of the post holes. Then you know where the posts will go! Then stick them down into your bottom layer till the hit the bottom of your board, then gently set the top layer onto the posts!!
Well i like the look of the bottom of this cake

and i also like the look of the stars on this one

so i kind of wanted to use the bottom of the one cake and the top from the other ( with different colors). Im just curious about which products work the best for getting this look and making the actual backyardigans Characters . As far as the books do you mean the magazines or actual books because ive only seen the magazines.
Thank for all the help already.
I would use gumpaste or fondant for the figures. I also recommend making your own. It is cheaper and tastes great. I use Toba Garrett's recipe from this site but I suggest adding extra sugar.
Don't pressure yourself. There is a lot of work in planning a party so don't wear yourself out! There are plenty of sites that you can buy plastic characters to add to your cake.
I have tried some pretty complicated cakes (still new at this) but oddly enough, my most popular cake on this site was a Backyardigans cake that was SUPER easy. You can click my photos link under this post to see it ![]()
Good luck and congrats on the twins, my SIL is expecting twin boys soon and we are all getting excited!!!
