I am pretty new to baking cakes, so I have a silly question. Until now if I had to make a 2 layered 9x13 cake, I always mixed the batter 2ce and baked the 2 cakes one after the other. I was wondering if there is anyway I can bake 2 large cakes at once to save a lot of time!
If so, what levels can I place the pans. I use the 2inch high pans, so am scared to put it in the lower middle rack as the cake might stick to the upper rack, but I plan on trying the flower nail method this time.
Also, will I need 2 or 3 cake mixes for 2 (9x13x2") cakes? I plan to add the pudding to the mix too.
Please advise.
when i bake 2 9x13 i use 2 cake mix or double the recipe if i am baking from scratch.. if u use all of the cake batter it will rise really high, but i have not had any over flow yet, i just press down as soon as it come out of the oven to make it nice and flat on top. hope that helps
If your mixer will hold that much batter, you can mix them both at the same time (mine will hold 2). However, you'd do better to bake them one at a time. I put the extra batter (in the mixing bowl) in the fridge until the other cake has baked. They won't bake correctly with one below the other. The cakes need to have circulation around them in the oven. I think if someone bakes more than one, they have a commercial oven that will hold more on one rack. You wouldn't want them too close even on the same rack.
I have a convection oven so I can actually bake three of those at the same time. But I don't know about regular oven. Maybe switch the cakes after awhile to make sure they bake even? The flower nail trick is the best also so that you don't get a big hump.

have a great day
How many cakes you can bake at the same time depends on the size of the oven. I can do 2 without a problem but there are some pretty small ovens out there. The KA I use will mix 3 cakes at a time without problems. I fill 2 pans, prepared with flower nails, and if there is extra, cupcakes are in order. So far no run over. I do move the cakes around in the oven to insure more even baking.
Thank you all. I did not know that I can keep prepared batter in the fridge until further use!!! I learn something new everytime I get on this site(which is throughout the day!) That really can save some time right there.
I dont use baking strips. But I cant wait to try the flower nail trick... Mine is the standard sized kitchen range ovens that we find here in the US.
I have baked 2 9x13s side by side in our oven without any problems. It would probably depend on how well your oven cooks. Ours is very even in it's cooking.
I cook two sometimes three (depending on the size) with no problems.
You should be able to bake 2 at a time, I always rotate the cake at the half point, but I do this even with cookies. If you can put them side by side and still have room for the heat to go around that would be OK. You can also rotate from top to bottom if you are concerned. Your other option is if you have a half sheet baking pan use it and then cut the layer in half.
