How Do You Do The Beautiful Wedding Cake Boards?

I tried doing this for a cake the other week and had some serious problems as I got air bubbles in it and couldn't get them out!
The person who taught this to me puts piping gel on the board so that the fondant would stick so I wasn't able to pick it up and place again... Do the rest of you use piping gel to make it stick also, or something else?
I also learned that you need to make sure the fondant doesn't go over the edge of the board. I thought it would look neater that way (and save trying to trim it evenly) and the ribbon would cover the edge. Unfortunately, when it dried and I tried to transport it, it broke because it was hanging over the edge so I had a crack on the top of the board, and it was then being held on only because of the ribbon! Just a tip for those of you trying for the first time!!
I have done it both ways (cut to edge and all the way over). They both work, but if I am doing, say, a 12" board, I glue 3 10" cardboards to the underside so that I can get my fingers underneath. This keeps the pressure off the fondant. I attach my fondant to the cardboard with either a spritz of water or a little royal icing. It doesn't have to be all over so much that you can't get it up again if you need to.
I personally don't like the fondant, and use just the pretty cake foil to cover my boards. You can get the foil by the rolls at like Hobby Lobby, Micheals.. etc. I think it's also much easier, and still looks really pretty too.
Then to make it look nicer, you can also use your star tip, to make like a lace border around the edge of the bottom of the cake! I've gotten many of compliments on the lace border around the bottom of the cake too!!
