believe me, i've tried. they don't work. i've used kosher "gelatin" and it doesn't set up well, its very soupy soft and tears at the lightest touch. go premade. satin ice is vegan and so is wilton if thats all you have access to. but satin ice tastes wonderful, and both vanilla and choc are vegan.

Thank you!! i'm asking for a spanish friend....She's learning cakes now and just wants it for practice. I was hoping there would be an option out there. I was just looking into finding out about wilton.

any other suggestions, tips, help would be great!!

so your friend's vegan? i would tell her to get the wilton fondant with the 40% off coupon when she's just wanting to practice. then on real cakes go for the good stuff. unfortunately mm's have gelatin and mm fluff has eggs, so she can't make mmf. she could possibly buy vegan mm's, but those are expensive anyway so its prolly just best to buy satin ice when she's wanting it for a nice cake. she prolly already has cake recipes, but if not i can give you some to give to her. i also make vegan BC with half fleishman's unsalted margarine and half shortening. tastes great, but comes out a little on the yellow/ivory side.

http://www.houstoncakeclub.com/goodfood/nfondant.htm

Here's a recipe for a homemade fondant using agar agar instead of gelatin. It's vegetarian as printed because it calls for mixing the fondant portion with candy clay. It's vegan if you only use the fondant part, which I'vetried it with just the fondant part and it turned out just fine. Only used it once, though, then just got tired of making my own and started buying Satin Ice instead.

Well, correct me if I am wrong but MMF would be vegetarian. My brother is a vegetarian and he does not eat meat, but does eat dairy and egg products. Vegans do not eat any type of animal by products.

No. Marshmallows are made with gelatin and gelatin is made from animal hooves.

Marshmellows are made with gelatin and gelatin is an animal product.

It sounds like it's probably not the case with your friend, but many vegans don't eat white sugar at all because about half of it is processed through animal bone char (yum, huh?) which includes major brands. I can't imagine trying to make fondant with beet sugar or something!

I've noticed that several brands of marshmallow creme are vegan, even though marshmallows aren't. I can't remember which ones off the top of my head (it's been a long time since I've had to look!) but I remember someone on here saying that they've successfully used marshmallow creme to make MMF.

i'd like to know what brand, because i've checked all my local grocery stores and all of the brands they carry have eggs in them, not vegan.

thank you all!! i would like to know the brand too.
We are looking for another alternative for marshmellows and gelatin.

beccakelly - thanks for offering to share the recipes. But she uses other animal products, so she can still use what she has.

thanks!
Kat

Marshmallow Fluff

http://www.marshmallowfluff.com/pages/faq.html

What is Fluff made from?

Corn syrup, sugar syrup, vanilla flavor, and egg white. There are no artificial preservatives, stabilizers, emulsifiers, or colorings in Marshmallow Fluff.

Is Fluff gluten free?

Yes; it is also Kosher.

And also the one from Kraft - which is the brand i use for reg mm.

the type of gelatin used in JET-PUFFED marshmallows is pork-based.
JET-PUFFED Marshmallow Creme, however, does NOT contain gelatin.

The easiest way to make sure you have a veggie friendly cake is to use white chocolate clay.

Katskakes- even though most vegetarians are lacto-ovo (they consume eggs and dairy products) strict vegans don't eat any animal products at all, including eggs and milk. The gelatin isn't really the issue here. icon_smile.gif

Txkat - white chocolate chips, white candy melts and white chocolate bars I've found in stores all contain milk solids. Believe me, I've looked. However, this website sells white "decorating chips" that are dairy free and as a bonus, the sugar is non-bone char processed. They also have a dairy free white chocolate bar.

I just made fondant substituting agar agar for gelatin and it worked just fine. I generally use Toba garrett's fondant recipe. I am not familiar with the icing sugar processing so I don't know much about that part of it.

Most cane sugar is processed using animal bone char to remove impurities and the vast majority of icing sugar is made with cane sugar, not beet (which is processed differently.) Some vegans won't eat cane sugar at all, some are less strict. When one of my sisters became a vegan, she only ate beet sugar. It's so hard to find though that she switched and prefers beet sugar but will eat cane sugar as well. My other vegan sister is OK with cane sugar. Everybody has to draw the line somewhere.

I suppose you could try putting the beet sugar in the blender to powder it, but every time I've tried that in the past (because I ran out of pdr sugar, not vegan issues) I just have not gotten a satisfactory result.

I've tried the one at this web address... yes, gelatin is an issue (it's made from bone) We are very strict vegans (due to allergies, etc) and our cakes/icings are delicious, no one can tell the difference. I don't use ANY animal products at all.
If you need another recipe, please PM me anytime.

good luck!
