I'm trying to make a bow as a cake topper out of gum paste because I wanted it to be kind of thin. Should I not be making it out of just gum paste? Should I do a mixture of gum paste and mmf? The problem I'm having is once I cut the strip and hang it over a pole to dry they are stretching out longer, thinning on top and eventually breaking. Laying them on their side to dry didn't work either because they wont stand up. They just flatten out. Could it be that my gum past just needs more powdered sugar?

It sounds like it does to me. Gum paste is supposed to be alot stiffer than fondant, almost like a pliable rubber or Silly-Putty texture.

Thanks, I'll try adding more sugar and see how that works.

definately need more sugar. If you are laying them down, you can put tissues bunched up in the middle of them until they dry, and they come out nice and puffy. Hanging them on the pole shouldn't effect them, though I've had that trouble with MMF, not gum paste. Did you make the gum paste, or buy it? I make my GP with royal icing and Tylose powder, and it comes out really stiff.

Your bow looks just like I'm wanting mine to look. I made the gum paste myself. I used the recipe on the back of Wilton's gum tex which called for powdered sugar, water and glucose. The glucose was to be a heaping spoon but since it is a gel it was hard to heap. Could that be my problem? Maybe not enough glucose?

I've never actually made it with the Wilton mix, but it's very possible that it doesn't have enough glucose. What exactly is in the powder? There has to be a drying agent somewhere, so maybe that's what they give you. I dried all of these with tissues inside them, then removed them and glued them together with RI.
