Question??? I finally got my First cake tasting/consultation for this weekend and the event planner said that her client wants four different flavors which require two different frostings plus fillings and I want to know should I have charged for the consultation considering the baking that has to be done for the cakes. I didn't advise her of a fee and was wondering if it would be in poor taste to go back to her and tell her the additional flavors are going to cost her or should I take it as a lesson learned for next time?? Any input would be appreciated.

She said her client requested:

Yellow Cake w/strawberry filling & Vanilla BC
Lemon Coconut w/lemon filling & Vanilla BC
Carrot Cake w/Cream Cheese BC
Red Velvet w/Cream Cheese BC

I do free tastings for people who have already hired me. I give them a menu and a tasting order form which allows them 3 cake flavors three icings and three fillings.

For perspective clients, we have open houses four times per year, at which we put out very small tastes ( hors doeuvre size) of about 30 different desserts.

Your first mistake is in letting the wedding planner dictate to you! You should have your policy in place & say here is what I offer:
I offer one cake flavor & my buttercream frosting. That is all.

I may be in the minority here, but I can completely understand why someon would want to taste several flavors prior to booking you - how else do they know if they like how your cakes taste?

Personally, i recommend doing slices of PLAIN cake, with the frosting on the side in sample dishes. That way they can mix and match as they wish.
