If your hands get hot while you're decorating that would cause the consistency to thin down. This happens to me all the time. It helps to keep a cool damp cloth close by to cool your hands down.
Usually, the hot hand problem is because you are nervous while making the roses. After you have made a few thousand you probably won't have that problem any more. If you can keep yourself relaxed while making them, it will help. Think...it's only a rose. If you use the all shortening buttercream for the roses it helps a lot also, even though it doesn't taste as good...it is a lot easier to work with.
I have hot hands regardless-hubby says they burn him ![]()
I've found that the best thing I can do to keep my frosting from turning into soup is to have a bowl of ice water with a cookie sheet on top. I'll keep switching bags, do part of the border, do a couple of roses, do some leaves, then back to the border.
I gave up BC roses a long time ago for several reasons. One....I'm horrible at them. Two, ribbon roses are darling and simple. And three....I learned to make fondant and gumpaste roses and they're just gorgeous! But honestly, I do many, many ribbon roses and people love them!
