I read in a Colette Peters book that she uses foamcore for cake bases and that these are available at craft stores. I checked Michael's and couldn't find anything called that. Can anyone explain what they look like and where to find them. The only thing I found were styrofoam bases in the floral section. It's not that is it?
i bought foamcore at michaels this weekend, so you may just have to poke around a bit more...
foamcore is a layer of styrofoam sandwiched between two layers of plastic (think styrofoam oreo cookie!) and generally it comes in big sheets similar to poster board.
HTH!

Cripes!! I missed the Michael's Sale!!
Does anyone know if Michaels has the little battery operated foam board cutter to custom make the mats? I saw a post about it and it looked cool and would love to use a coupon for it instead of ordering online and then getting stuck paying shipping too....(**cheep,cheep,cheep**) ![]()
I know in the Michael's I work in, the foam board has now been moved clear across the store--away from where the poster board is. It used to be in the same area, but not anymore. So check around the store--you'll find it, because Michael's does carry it.

I know of a battery operated foam cutter (in the foam section with all the floral stuff), which I have and which melts through foam like butter. I have tried it with the foam boards, but it doesn't work because of the paper coating on it. My sharp utility knife works great!
Is it strong enoug to hold a 12x18 or do you have to double?

Actually, my personal preference is to use 1/2" thick foam board--super strong and still very light-weight. With big cakes, if you have the thin boards, I would double them, but that is me. My cakes tend to be pretty heavy. ![]()
Yes, doubled sheets of 3/16th foamcore will hold a very heavy cake.
I use a hot craft (x-acto) knife to cut my foamcore. It works like a charm. They do carry it at Michael's, Joann's, etc.

I've never used foamcore, but I have read several posts where people swear by it.
I switched to masonite recently, bought at NY Cake and through Winbeckler. I prefer it to anything else I have tried.
