I would like to start decorating dummy cakes -- one for the practice and one to sort of have samples of my work on hand. My question is using the buttercream on the dummies, how long do those of you who do practice cake dummies keep the samples? Can it be indefintiely in a cool storage place? Any problems with ants, etc.?

I've kept some of mine for over a year. I use an all-crisco recipe when making dummies. If you keep them away from light (constant exposure), they'll keep their colour fairly well. I've never had problems with ants, in fact, I'd never thought about that! I've just had problems with people's dirty fingers touching the dummies!!! grrr!

I don't usually use buttercream on the dummies unless you are using it for practice and want to scrape down and do it again. If you are planning to keep the decorated dummies I would suggest use a royal icing or spackle to decorate, it will dry hard and you won't have to worry about the BC getting damaged after all your work. If you want to reuse the dummy just wrap it first in plastic wrap, then decorate, that way when you want to you can reuse the dummy. Keep out of sunlight. For a more permanent look you can spray them with an acrylic clear spray, that will protect them. You will still have to deal with dust, but having it sprayed the dust should come off with a duster.
