In the few times that I have made bows or larger fondant/gumpaste items I have used a combination of skewers and icing to secure them to the cake. I know some of the bows and ribbons etc. I have made can be quite "heavy" and I get nervous they will just let go or tear the cake. So I am curious to know what other methods if any, are there for securing the more elaborate bows etc.?

I have always used the clear vanilla....if had to let them dry then maybe used toothpicks or skewers to hold until dry.

BTW...where are you in the Maritimes? I am originally from Moncton.

Suela....well we used to be neighbours haha....I'm just outside of Saint John in the valley!! Nice to meet a fellow Maritimer!!
I use the vanilla or the meringue powder to "glue" my bow peices together but I wondered if there are any other methods to actually secure them to the cakes other than or in addition to, the skewers etc.

Use a cake board cut to fit so that you don't see it and dowel rod the cake spot where the bow will sit.

You can use melted candy wafers for the glue. Also, you can color the candy the same color of your bow so that the glue blends in with the bow.

On heavy items such as large bows or gumpaste flowers, I use glue and a board underneath.

Gee I would never have thought about a small cake board. One of the things I do is when i have royal frosting on the go I make little "holders". They are just a dollop of icing and skewers or toothpicks stuck in at various angles and allowed to dry completely. Then when I have an awkward bow, ribbon or flower I attach the "holder" and stick the item in the cake. I think your suggestion of using a cake board is probably a much sturdier idea. Thanks for the insight icon_smile.gif
