This is the birthday cake that I made for my Gramma this past weekend. She LOVES chocolate, so the cake is chocolate sour cream marble with chocolate buttercream filling, all frosted in vanilla buttercream. I used an impression mat for the sides (first time) and my first time doing a square cake - those corners are a bugger!!!

Any comments are appreciated. I am new, so I'm always looking for ways to improve!!

Your cake looks great!! icon_smile.gif You did much better than I would. I haven't done a square cake, but I've done the 11 x 13 rectangle and when I took it out of the pan, I said, "Where is the cake?" The only thing I could figure
out was I didn't have enough batter. The sides were only about an inch high! I used a box cake mix (Pillsbury) and it does seem like they don't put as much in their batter mix as some of the others. So now I am buying other brands and trying them out. I haven't done the rectangle yet, but I plan to. Anyway, your cake looks much better than mine!!

Did you only use one mix? I think that, when the manufacturers list 9 X 13 on the package as a size you can use, they mean the old-fashioned cake-in-the-pan presentation that was so popular in the 70's. For a 9 X 13, you need about a mix and a half (of any of the brands, pretty much).

You did a wonderful job. I love the colors of the roses. Your quilting on the sides is a very nice touch too.

Redpanda, this is a double layer 10" square so I used 2 cake mixes. I also tried the flower nail trick I learned here on CC and it worked like a charm!! My cakes rose evenly and beautifully. No leveling required!!! icon_rolleyes.gif Gotta love that!!
