I am making a Jack Skellington (Nightmare Before Christmas) cake for my friend's birthday next week. She wants it to be 3-D and in the shape of Jack Skellinton's head only. Does anyone have any tips on how to execute such a thing? icon_cry.gif

Sorry I've never made one so I'm not really any help. But, I think it will make a great cake! Be sure to post the photos when done.

Maybe you could use a ball shape pan????

I can't help but I've seen pictures of this type of cake in the gallery. For instance

As Risque Business suggested, try doing some searches in the forums. If that doesn't help, you can try to PM someone who has made this cake.

Hi Genipher!
I did make a Jack cake and it wasn't hard at all. This is what I did. Bake the cake in the sports ball pan. Cut off a small slice off the bottom of one 1/2 of the ball so it sits flat. Take the other half, dome side up and scoop out two spoonfuls of cake for the inset eye area. Turn both halfs upside down and crumb coat with bc. After it sets up for a few minutes, turn the bottom half over, and fill with a thin layer of bc to adhere the top half to it. There is the head. I had a gap between the top and bottom halves of the balls so that was perfect for the mouth area. If yours don't have that gap, you can easily just slice out that portion.

I don't do much fondant work so the one I did was all buttercream. I used the Viva paper towel method to smooth the frosting. I built up the nose part with bc until I thought it looked about right and then piped on the black bc for the eyes and the mouth.

Hope that helps!
KimAZ
