Yesterday we made a cake with fondant flowers, yellow and pink. We brought along some extra flowers when we delivered the cake, just in case something happened during the drive. The extras were left in a ziploc container on the dash of the car for about 4 hours(it was a cloudy day). When we returned, we discovered that the pink flowers had turned completely white! They weren't just white on the top, like the sun bleached them, they were white all over. We even broke them open, they were white all the way through, no trace that they were ever pink! The yellow flowers and green leaves looked exactly the same, and the pink flowers on the cake were fine. Has anyone else had this happen?? Very weird, just had to share the story!

yes...colored fondant is notorious for changing color when left in the sun. You have to be very careful with it. At least it was the extras that you learned this lesson with!!

Yes I have heard this before, it hasn't happened to me but the advice I have been given is to not leave anything like that exposed to lots of light... you may have thought it was cloudy but it was probably still bright. Best to leave things like that in a box with a lid, that way they are dry, no moisture and nice and dark.

Yip that'll do it! I sat at my dining room table a few weeks ago (sun was streaming in and I was enjoying the sunshine) making a fairy with a pretty pink dress. By the time I'd finished all the pink and purple in her dress had faded!

Yes! But it only seems to do it with certain colours (I use Americolors), pink, violet & blue are the worst icon_confused.gif !

Thanks for the replies, glad I'm not the only one this has happened to!! It freaked me out because the yellow and green looked completely normal! I'm glad we moved the cake to a dark room right away!

I have really learned this lesson the hard way! My first big, big, fondant cake was a lavender cake that traveled 3hrs. away. Well when we got to the site and took the cake out of the car it was blue! Of course everthing in the hall was lavender. I just started crying! The people at the hall were very nice and all was well. But now I cover all my colored fondant cakes and flowers with a black trash bag when I transport it. I also will take a sample of the color and set it out in direct sunlight to see if the color changes and if it does, how long does it take.

I believe it's the red in the dye that fades? I've had this happen with pink, fuschia and purple! It doesn't take long either! It's very frustrating! icon_mad.gif

OMG I have been meaning to post this same thing! I was in the car for I swear couldn't have been more than 25 min with my last wedding cake. I had taken along some extra fondant (lavander) in case something happened. When I got to the site the side of the cake toward my car hatch had faded from lavender to blue. Fortunately I was able to hide it with flowers and turning the cake around, but I learned a important lesson. When I got home I broke open the glob of fondant to see how far it had faded and took this pic.

the purple turning blue has happened to me with my buttercream. Luckily it was on my anniversary cake and just for a party with family.
