Hi! I am creating my grandmother's wedding cake (she is pretty brave, thought, since I have only decorated three cakes so far). I did a sample layer, just for practice, and I can't seem to get the fondant to be nice and smooth on the cake. It is a round cake. The top is smooth but the sides are all bumpy and messed up. Can someone tell me the proper way to put the fondant on a round cake??? Thanks so much icon_biggrin.gif

carve the cake the shape you want it and don't put too much icing on the sides. One ccer advised to touch it as little as possible, using two fondant smoothers rather then just one.

It also helps to chill the buttercream covered cake before applying the fondant. This makes it firmer and easier to handle.
