How many of you have an air-brush and how much do they usually go for? Is buying the "paint" for them especially expensive? I know someone who has her own cake decorating business and she recently bought one for two-hundred and something dollars because she thought hers was broke. Turns out, it wasn't broke, just a part was messed up. She said she will sell her old one to me for $50. Not sure if I want it or not. Are they really useful and are you glad you have one? I need some a "product review" from the decorators on CC!! Thanks in advance!
I just received my Kopykake Airmaster airbrush a few weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. It works so much better for me than the others I purchased at Harbor Freight and AC Moore and Michaels.
I paid $200, with free shipping, as an exclusive pre-convention offer to ICES members this past Summer.
In order for us to advise you as to whether you should buy her old airbrush or not, you will need to give us details on the airbrush, brand, model, whether it is gravity-feed, single or double action, things like that.
I have been working with airbrushing for a short while now, and I do not regret my purchase.

I have one! I got it about a week ago. It is lots of fun! I can't really give any advice on what one to get because I haven't researched it mine is from kopyKake and I got it for free (woohoo! that is the only way i could ever get one) My grandma gave it to me. She used to do cakes but can't anymore so I got some of her stuff.

air brushes are great if you have the oppurtunity to purchase one for 50 dollars and it is in good shape i say go for it.
I find I mostly use my airbrush for all over color, either with luster dust or a color I don't want to make alot of icing in, like the darker colors. I have used it with some stencils as well.
Have you tried the search feature on the site? Airbrushes have been discussed before so there are several posts on different brands and uses for them.
I do agree, find out what brand she has and what she thought was wrong with it. $50 is a great price for the airbrushes made for cakes, but if the airbrush is going to turn around and break on you next week, you'd be better off buying a new one yourself. So find out some more information from her about it. Ask to see her use it or ask to test it out yourself.
As far as the airbrush colors, there are several brands out there, even Americolor has some. I haven't priced them though.
I have the Airmaster from Kopykake and I love it!!! I mostly use it for all over color as well as I am no artist with the thing.....If you can get a good model for $50.00..I say go for it!!
I will try to get more information on the air-brush. I know absolutly nothing on name brands or model numbers, but she probably does. I only know her through my Grandma and it may be a while before I can get details from her because she is soposed to be going on a cruise soon. I'm glad to know that $50 is a really good deal. It sounds like having an air-brush will save time coloring icing, too!
Thanks for the tips!

I too am looking at purchasing an airbrush and have a few questions. I understand that the airmaster is the best model and dual control is recommended.
Where does everyone get their airbrush color from (especially kiddiekakes) and how do use luster dust with an airbrush? I have one cake in mind that needs luster dust on buttercream and am wondering how you do it.
Thanks so much!

gibson,
I have an airmaster air brush from KopyKake. I have had it for over 7 years now with no problems. (no pictures in my gallery, I mostly use air brush on my store cakes that I sell, and don't take pictures of those cakes, they are before finding cc)
I only use americolor in my airbrush. The colors are vibrant and they work the best for me.
I tried luster dust mixed with everclear in my airbrush and I didn't have much luck, it sputtered on me. So hopefully someone else can help you with that question.
I have the Airmaster, also. I love it. My hubby and MIL got it for me for a b-day present 4 years ago. I use it quite often because I like the realistic shading I can get on some cakes, especially the "naughty" ones. I have a couple of airbrushed cakes in my profile. The colors I have are from Chefmaster. I got them with the airbrush and had not heard of Americolor at the time, otherwise I would have gotten those. I like their gels best, so the airbrush colors must be good. I tried the luster dust also, and had the sputtering problem, too. I think the dust clogs the brush. But, yeah, $50 is a great deal. Be careful, though, if there is a part that needs replacing. The parts are not always cheap. If the brush is spraying in several directions and not a nice mist, it may need a new needle. If it is the compressor, I would consider buying a new one.
