Looking for outlining advice. I am so swiggly and all over the place. I want to do my first fbct and my outlining needs to be soo much better. I have practiced with a #2 and a #3 tip. TIA
Do i rest my wrist on the counter while outlining or have it up in the air?
I am just looking for advice for the shaky handed ![]()
My best advice is practice!!! Also, it really helps me to hold the bag at about 45 degrees and only write from left to right and up to down, if that makes sense. I am right handed and that way i am not going against myself. Let me know if thats not a good explanation...
Hope it helps!!! ![]()
Wrist up in the air, and keep the tip off of the surface and let your line fall down onto the cake. Always move your tip left to right or top to bottom. Turn the cake if you need to in order to be able to outline easily. Don't fill your bag too full or you'll be straining and shaking everywhere! Less icing in the bag requires less pressure and you use different muscles in your hand that are better controlled for most people. I just put one or two generous scoops. Also it's easier to outline with thin consistancy, and maybe go up to a #4 so it's easier to get out.
Just a few ideas, good luck!
Oh, and also, PRACTICE!! My outlines aren't perfect, but get better every time!

I find that it's easier to do outlining and writing with my whole arm up in the air, and moving from my shoulder.
When I try to do it like writing, using my wrist and hand to do the work, it comes out messy. If I move from my shoulder, it's much easier to do it neatly.
It takes practice, and it feels awkward at first to do it that way, but I've seen many people recommend it and it really does work once you get the hang of it.
Also, make sure your icing is the right consistency, and don't fill your bag too full. It's much easier to control the flow when the icing bag fits comfortably in your hand, plus if it's very full it gets heavy!
If your icing is too thick, you have to squeeze the bag harder, and that makes it harder to pipe a straight line.
hth!
Laura.
Thanks everyone. I was practicing with wiltons canned white icing so it probably was too thick for practicing my outlining.
If you're practicing with the canned icing, thin it a little w/water, try a teaspoon at a time
