In order to put them on the cake itself they have to be the non-toxic kind. For gum paste, mix a small amount of clear spirits (I use vodka) with some of the luster dust and paint it on using a paint brush. I've never tried using them on buttercream but I know you can not mix them into and expect to get a metalic buttercream.

I have airbrushed a luster dust on a cake, but I can't think of any other way you would be able to do it. You mix it with vodka or another high alcohol content like lemon extract then spray.

Are you asking if they are safe to eat? They are non-toxic and able to be eaten without harm, but not considered to be a 'foodstuff'.

Did that help at all?

And by the way - the question was NOT silly! icon_smile.gif
