Hi all,

I just bought a set of cake dummies because I am new at this and am tired of making so many cakes just to practice. I didn't realize what I was actually buying was just styrofoam. Does anyone have and idea what I can cover them with so they don't get ruined after the first time. They say they are reusable but I just don't see how they will hold up. Thanks so much!

I cover mine with saran wrap so I can peel the frosting off and reuse. HTH

I have decorated mine several times using royal icing, and then are doing just fine. I just wash them in hot water to melt off any crusted icing. I've never tried using fondant or regular buttercream on them, though, so I don't know how the shortening or other ingredients might affect the styrofoam.

All I know is, if you stick to Royal Icing, they'll be fine! icon_smile.gif

You can practice with the back of your cake pans. This particularly good for border work, freehand writing etc. Just scrape the frosting off and back into the container, and wash your pan and tips etc. and you are good to go.

At one of the schools where I take classes they use buttercream directly on the cake dummies and they appear to be holding up well. I used saran wrap once and the buttercream kept pulling it off. The saran wrap wouldn't cling to the styrofoam. After that I just practiced straight on the dummy and washed it in hot water.

I was wondering the same thing. In the class I took, my instructor would cover them in royal icing and buttercream. She said that she would spray them with hairspray because it would make them hard. I have never tried this myself, has anyone else heard of this?
