I'm in the middle of making a cake and I'm having problems with my MMF. I'm using some left over MMF I had a couple months ago that I had in the freezer and I pulled out and thawed out. Before I added color to it, I added a little bit of powdered sugar so it wouldn't be very sticky. I added red coloring to it and as I kneeded it, it seems very crumbly. I tried rolling it out on the Wilton mat (I greased the mat and the rolling pin) and the MMF is sticking to the rolling pin and just doesn't seem to want to hold together. Is there anything I could do to help save the MMF and make it work? I need help ASAP! Thanks.

try popping it in the microwave for about 10 seconds to soften it and reknead it and see if that helps

I'm not a MMF expert, but have tried a few times. When I found mine to be crumbly, I put shortning on my hands and kneaded it really well....the shortning seemed to help!

I've actually started kneading quite a bit of shortening into my MMF, maybe 1/4 - 1/3 c or so. I just scoop up a glob with my fingers, knead it in, then add more until I get a smoother consistency and a bit of stretch.

Thanks. I've done both things, put it in the microwave for a few seconds and kneed shortening into the MFF. But I still had difficulty rolling it out because it still wanted to stick to the rolling pin (even though I greased the rolling pin). I ended up using my palms to flatten it out. I was able to make it work for what I needed it for, but I wasn't too happy with out it turned out. Still wondering what the problem was.

You said you kneaded in a bit of PS when you took it out of the freezer. I wonder if you got it too dry and that's why it was cracking? I did that once - put in too much ps - so sprayed a bit of water on it and kneaded it in, along with Crisco. It was sticky for a little bit until the water was incorporated, but after kneading for a while it was a beautiful consistency.

I do too. And I found it doesn't dry out as easily and stays supple.

I have never frozen mmf...I don't think the experts advise on that. Maybe thats the problem.
I would suggest more microwave and crisco though, hopefully it works out for ya!!!
