They are simple to make. First bake a cake any size will work, cool. Then take the same size pan and fill it with softened icecream, I then refreeze a little and then stackthe two together. Sometimes you see them with hot fudge or caramel sauce betweent the layers (Yum). You can frost with coolwhip or other frosting and freeze. Works best if you work on the cake for 10-15 min and then freeze and work somemore.
heres a link to how to make one.

I just did my first ice cream cake the other day. I baked my cake, layered and froze it. Than when I needed to put it together I softened the ice cream and put in the same size pan, refreeze. THan take the bottom of your cake put that on top of the ice cream and flip out of the pan, onto the cake board. Than take your top of the cake and put onto the ice cream. refreeze again. Ice and work quickly in between refreezing to insure that the ice cream doesnt melt on you. Good luck.
I always buy the block ice cream. I bake the cake, chill it, torte it. Then I take the block ice cream and slice the size wedges I want, lay them on the cake put the layer on top of it and put in freezer for about 30 minutes. I then pull it out, ice, back in the freezer, and then put my decoration on it. It saves me from having to soften the ice cream and put it in a pan and freeze and then take out. The block ice cream is easy to work with.
