warning this might be a little hard for some of you to stomach.
Some of you might remember me writeing about my cat being pregnant and me considering having her fixed or allowing her to have the kittens. well I went ahead and let her have the kittens she had 5 one was still born and one dissapeared about a week later now the 3 remaining kittens are about 7 weeks old and 2 of them are growing and advancing really well but there was one that was very small and having a lot of trouble getting around. also side note the kittens momma and our older cat who normally get along have been fighting like crazy every since the first kitten disspeared. anyway the little kitten was having a lot of trouble and I have been feeding her from a baster and allowing her to sleep on my warm heating pad. but I came home today to find that her mom had eaten her everything but her fur her head and paws were laying in anther room i'm just so sad and sickened by this I hear that its nature for cats to do this but it just doesnt seem right to me. and now my DH thinks we should consider putting the mamma cat down because of this and because she is continusly attacking our older cat. I dont want that to happen I just dont know what is going on. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please???
I'm not an expert by any means, but I do know that if somethingis wrong with a kitten it's normal for the momma to eat it. It's an instinct. Kind of like how goats will eat all of their afterbirth, including the hay that the birthing fluid ended up on to prevent the attraction of predators. She may be fighting with the other cat trying to protect her remaining kittens. I would have the momma checked by your veterinarian and ask his or her opinion what to do with the mooma cat. I really don't think it will be necessary to put her down; it may be as easy as just going ahead and spaying her. Worst case if you decide to get rid of her, you could find a local cat rescue to take her and adopt her out to a home with no other cats. I would really suggest getting your vets opinion before making any decisions though. I hope this helps
Thankyou for you advice I really have no plans to put her down I couldnt see myslef getting rid of her in anyway. I dont think shes figthing with the older cat who is her mom by the way to protect the kittens because our older cat has always been very motherly towards the kittens. as far as my vet we just moved here about 2 weeks ago and I havent found a vet yet but I will as soon as we get settled in a bit.
