So....I use to work in a bakery about 8 years ago, and always enjoyed doing cakes. I just recently starting getting back into it. I just started doing them for friends to practice you know free of charge. Well now it's getting to be rediculous! I'm constantly having people asking me to do their cakes now. Starting to get expensive. Buying supplies really starts to add up especially when I may be doing 2-3 a week. I have yet to charge for any of the cakes in my profile. The marine cake I was given a donation. A very nice one I might add! I was also given a donation for the Elmo, she had given me $25 which I didn't want to take! But what about the rest of them? I'm getting alot of people wanting me to do the bassinette cake! That takes some time. It's a 2 day process, between making the hood and letting it dry then making the cake itself. Alot of my free time is going in to these and I have very little free time so why should my cakes be free!

Wow now that i got that out. So does anybody have any advice on how I go about charging for this stuff? I always doubt myself when doing cakes I think that's my problem. I don't ever think they are good enough for me to charge for, but my little "side job" is going to make me broke! Please Help!!!!!!! Any advice would be greatlu appreciated. I don't ever know where to start. Not even sure how much I should be charging for this stuff. Thanks in advance.

I'm not up on my CA law but that is the first thing - are you 'legal' or how would/could you become legal. When you start accepting payment is when the liablility mushrooms. I understand where you are coming from - I tell people I just can't do them.

I haven't done alot of cakes. Only for family and I figure out how much it will cost for ingredients. The peolpe have been so pleased they add an extra $5 or so. The last time I did a cake for them I was asked how much time it takes to do a cake. There's was a basket weave. So I know now they no how much time I really put in a cake. So I think the next one will pay better. I may be wrong but they are good freinds who told me I need to do this to sell to others icon_biggrin.gif Made me feel good but I don't think I am there yet. I want practice so this is good practice for me. I am also donating to fundraisers for me to get practice. But you at least need to get your cost out of it. Or you will not like it for long icon_sad.gif I don't have alot of money so know where you are coming from.

I'm fairy new at this, but there are a few ways to approach this --

1. for good friends and family, you can tell them you'll do the cake at cost (meaning they pay or buy the ingredients for you);

2. when an acquaintence asks you to do a cake, you can ask them what their budget is. I learned this "what's your budget?" line from this site and it works great! It tells them upfront that you want to be paid for your work.
