Ok, I'm relatively new to decorating, and I notice that a lot of people charge around an extra $1.00 per slice for covering a cake in MMF... I personally would RATHER decorate with MMF!! I find it soooo hard to get my bc smooth and looking good that it's just easier for me to cover in MMF... As a matter of fact I RECOMMEND that people get their cakes done in that, and I don't really charge any more...
Am I crazy for doing this?! ![]()
Well, usually it may not be more labor intensive to cover a cake in fondant but it sure is more time consuming to do so.
You have to wait for this or that to dry and then there are the ingredients too, they are just a tad more expensive than buttercream.
If you feel comfortable doing it that way than go for it. But then again, you also have to take into consideration too that you have buttercream AND fondant on the cake not just buttercream.
You really have two layers of icing on the cake and you should charge accordingly. (see what I mean about the time factor?) You have to take time to cover the cake with buttercream (whether it's smooth or not and THEN cover it with fondant. So the fondant is more expensive if you think about it, even if it is MMF.
Nope, I think the same thing. For the life of me I can't figure out how people make their BC so smooth! I did a great job last nite, and woke up to find my icing sliding off my cake... so I agree, fondant is way easier!
My favorite way to decorate is with BC base and MMf accents to cover up the not smooth bc.
I do not charge that much more for MMF because it is actually cheaper to make than BC, but you still have to BC under the MMF, so I do charge more.
But lots of people buy premade fondant, which makes the cost go way up, so that is why they charge more. Plus it takes longer to work with, unless you are like me and I think I spend more time smoothing the BC than I do rolling fondant.

See, I'm with the PP that it takes me more time to smooth out my bc and make it look good that it takes to cover my cake in MMF!!
I guess I just need to take more time and learn how to cover a cake in BC properly!
I hate crumb coating! Then adding another layer of BC!!! The one time I got my BC cake to look good was when it was covered in basket weave, so that hardly counts!
Ah well! Practice makes perfect I guess!
