Making Fondant Gift Box Lid

can you tell me when i make the fondant gift box with lid. do i first coat the whole cake with fondant, then cut a lid and put on top (so it's thick) or i saw one website did it as one strip around the cake and nothing on top. then cut a lid and put on top. thanks
I just did a shoebox last weekend and is the same concept, I used a real shoe box as pattern and what I did is to put fondant on top of the box lid and let it dry, it was perfect!
