HI
Today i have discovered that my idea of turning our ajoining studio to our house into a bakery may not happen.
After visiting zoning and finding out that I can have ahome business just not one anyone comes to but you can have people pick up cakes just if anyone asks say noone comes to pick up cakes. The actual words said from zoning.
To visiting sanitation. The 3 sink thing the mop sink the hand sink all okay. But you must have separate bathroom when I said noone could come he said how are you going to get business etc and so the conversation went. Then I get home read all info and the garbage area I know is going to be an issue. This is all before I go to talk to the fire people.

DH reckons just make cakes from home pass out business cards and don't bother with the licensing. But the passing out of business cards is advertising and I don't want to get in trouble.

The main thing is onone makes cakes in the area full time so I know there is a demand. Due to the family and friends (i have just moved here with DH) I have picked up 6 cakes already and have people asking when I am starting full time every week.

So I guess I just wanted to know where I go from here. Any ideas.
Thanks Rachael

I can offer delivery but I don't think it is going to solve the problem.

I am not exactly sure what you are saying the problem is? The garbage area should be simple....lay a square of concrete on the side to put your trash cans w/lids on. As for the bathroom....why do you need it? Who will use it? I don't have a public restroom in my shop and once I told the inspector I am take out only she said "oh, then you don't need one". When opening my shop I found that most of the people I talked to over the phone really had no idea what the actual law was. I just got the info from the HD and followed the guidelines, the first being to draw out the plans and submit them to make sure the building was actually capable of following the law. Once my plans were approved I just moved onto the next step... It never pays to side step the law especially when you are selling food. I wish you much luck.

Hi All
I have spoken again to health department sanitation and asked about the bathroom again. You need to have a public bathroom for any food establishment as you are inviting the public into your business. So basically you have to have bathroom no exceptions.

As for the garbage as long as the bins are large enough can be closed and don't smell I won't have to put hot and cold taps outside to clean.

I have got all the information from the health department and the info on submitting plans to see if it is possible. Just on reading the info I am not sure it is going to be possible. But i am not ready to give up and will keep you posted.
