Krisy, you don't have to use a filling. You can actually use your icing as a filling. However, if you would like to use a filling and you are just beginning, go with something easy like strawberry or rasberry jams. They taste quite yummy with chocolate cake.

For chocolate cakes I like strawberry or raspberry preserves. I also like carmel or dulce de leche. And then if you want more chocolate you can always use the chocolate toppings for ice cream or hot fudge sundays as long as it is thick.

Just thought I'd let you know that the nutella b/c was a hit, I made it with a butter cake though.

mkolmar, how did you do the nutella and butterceam? I tried it last week, using about half buttercream and half nutella, and the mixture seized up and was the consistency of fudge. I tried to microwave it to make it spreadable, but that didn't help.

I ended up just using nutella out of the jar.

I'd love to do a mix of the two, because what I made tasted great, but there was no way I could fill a cake with it! icon_cry.gif

Thanks!
Laura.
