I need to make some flat pieces for an in-line skate cake. I don't really want to use gumpaste, because it doesn't need to harden that much, and needs to have a curve over the side of the cake. Will marzipan hold it's shape if I cut it Thursday night and leave it out for a Saturday afternoon birthday party?

I have never made MMF, and don't really want to if I don't have to. I only need to use a little bit for the buckles and the frame that the wheels go in. I have a small can of marzipan here. Is the canned the same quality as homemade?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Marzipan does not harden. The surface will dry out but I wouldn't trust it to hold a curved shape without some kind of support

Thank MissBaritone. Do you think it is too heavy, if I cut it into a strip and laid it on a cake with buttercream and draped it over the side, would it sink? I knew you would be able to help me! icon_smile.gif

As long as you roll it fairly thin it should be ok

Thank you so much. I think I've decided to play it safe and go with gumpaste for these pieces. (Since this cake is actually for someone that I am not related to icon_smile.gif ) I will use the marzipan on Monday for a 'kicked up' carrot cake for my parent's anniversary.

So now, new scenario......If I roll it thin, and do cut-outs from it, then replace with different color cut out of the same shape, then roll just a touch...do you think it will stay? Or, should I just lay the secondary cut out on top of the all-the-way intact first layer of marzipan? I was thinking of orange/yellow/brown leaves for fall on top of the carrot cake. Thought that would look pretty. The other think I COULD maybe do, is small leaf cut-outs and leave the carrot cake underneath showing through??

What do you think?

Well I've done the cut outs with fondant replacing them with different colour cut outs and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work with marzipan. Just keep your shapes fairly simple

Thank you very much for all your help Miss Baritone. I think it is wonderful that we have access to so many other people in so many different places. The experiences we have are all different, and it really helps to be able to utilize the advice of others.

Thats one of the things I love about this site. We have so much to learn from each other. One of the first things I learned from this site was how to do FBCT. This technique is practically unheard of in England so I've done a couple for various shows. Both times I've won and I've actually had a judge come to me afterwards and ask how on earth I achieved the technique and where I learned to do it.
