you know the colors that someone has chosen for a cake will look abit silly and clash with each other?????

i have always been told that i have a reasonable sense of taste when it comes to what colors look good together, not just in cake decorating but even the colors i have painted the inside of my house and the furntiure i choose etc etc....

but now i have to decorate a cake with a couple of colors, that i just can't picture looking any good....

all i get from family and friends is ' you not decorating the cake to suit yourself you doing it for the person and they are the colors that they want'.

What colors? Share that revulsion!! LOLOL icon_lol.gif

I guess there's a line you can walk here. I mean, they chose you because of your reputation for beautiful and tasty cakes. So you can make them happy, along with giving it your own twist. It might be possible to add a third color to have it all blend together.

Bottom line is - the customer is paying, thus the customer gets (within reason) what they want.

My suggestion would be to show them a sample of the colors they want, try to show them a better choice, but ultimatly, they choose. That is how I feel anyway.

I just had that happen. My sister's co-worker got her BA, and they want a cake covered in chocolate ganache decorated with sotas and a silhouette, and pastel colored roses to celebrate. Plus a "congrats" message! Talk about a busy cake!

I convinced her of this, said that I was thinking of just a single color to do roses. Explained that it would be too busy and take away from its elegance. (Ganache can be fancy looking stuff, ya know).

Little does she know, they will be getting tea roses, so I can keep them small. There will also be green leaves, so they will feel like they're "getting their color".

If you have the luxury of being creative with the design, I'm sure you will find a way to make it happen to your liking. After looking at your beautiful cakes, I have no doubt you can do it.

The last wedding cake I did the bride wanted pale green. Not seafoam! Not spring! Not mint!
I took my DMC floss and told her to pick out what she called pale green. It worked wonder. Floss is .20 a piece at Walmart - my sister went to Sherwin Williams and bought ($5) a color fan, like they use on HGTV - with all the paint chip colors. THat way everyone is on the same page.

thanks guys

the colors she wants are all great colors - hot pink, yellow, purple and green. but her main color is hot pink she also wants spots and stripes.

i have made the colors and they do look ok together but i just think the cake will to to busy and over done in colors.

i want to mostly do pink and silver with just a little color (not) but my friend said, 'thats what you want not what she wants'.

this is the issue i am going to face when making a cake for someone else, cause i like things my way. lol

forgot to mention its for a girl turning 21.

Maybe if you drew her a picture of what she wnated, complete with color, and then one of what you had in mind she might get on the same wavelength as you? most of the time it helps if the person can see it with there eye instead of in there head

Maybe she can't "see it in her head" like you do. Some people like bright - wild things - others don't - I guess that is what makes the work go around!
If see is a paying customer - then it's her way. But, you can do everything within your power to show (visual)her that you think it won't look good.

i think i could figure in all the colors if!!!!!!

the cake was iced in white buttercream but she wants it hot pink, with the other colors as spots and stripes.

she liked my little girls 1st birthday cake in my photos and thats what she based her 21st cake on. to me i probably still see it as being a baby cake not a cake for a girl turning 21.

That DMC floss idea is brilliant! I was into crossstitching (does that word really have three "s"'s in a row??? icon_eek.gif) a couple years ago and literally bought EVERY SINGLE DMC color there is. I know, I am completely insane. madhatter.gificon_redface.gif Anyway, I got bored with that hobby, and now have all of those colors just sitting in boxes. Now, I have a new use for them, thanks to cowdex!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! <bowing down to cowdex> icon_lol.gif

thumbs_up.gif Ok, this is my other tip. They sell the little cardstock "spools" (that you wind the thread on) with a hole in the end. I have about 8 big metal rings and all my thread on those cards - in numerical order....yes I can be anal at times....but it's easier to find a color that way! It would also work by just leaving the thread "as is" and putting one end thru the ring.

Uhhhhhh .... I also have those little cardstock "spools", as well as the big metal rings!!!!!!! What are the odds?!?!?!??! icon_eek.gificon_lol.gif Unfortunately, I got tired of winding the floss around the spools, so I only got about 1/3 of the way through all of the colors. The ones that are on the spools are in numerical order, though! Each little spool has a little tiny label with the floss color number on it. I really am insane!!!!!!!!! icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

I think those colors will be fine. Many people like the bright colors on a cake.

I also was told once that nature has every color in it and if you pick a bunch of flowers in all the differnet colors they do go together.

I say let the person paying/ordering the cake pick the colors. If they don't like it they can't throw it back on you for making them change the colors they asked for.

You could also tone down the colors by not making them so "hot" in color.
