I haven't been decorating cakes for long, but i have been baking a while now. I am still taking a course... i made a cake for class and brought it in to work so we can get our snack on during the afternoon... anyway... one of my coworkers asked me if I would do a cake for her grandaughters birthday. 8" 2 layer choc cake with BC icing, decorated with a few roses.. pretty basic. She asked me how much I would charge her, when I told her $20, she looked at me funny and said " That's all?" My hubby thinks i should have charged her more too. But if you look at the pics I've posted you can see they are not up to a pro level, so I felt uncomfortable charging more. What do y'all think?

I'm basically a sheetcake person; but my price for an 8in 2 layer is $25. (my prices are low compared to others on cc). I feel like I charge what I'd like to pay if I were on the receiving end!

That is what I would charge. I am just starting out too and I know how much I would pay.

Maybe once I get better, I would increase my charges.

I agree with everyone else. I would charge $25 here (KY) but $20 is still reasonable.

Go into the local bakeries and check out their prices. Depending on the type of cake, decorations, etc,.. $20.00 is rather cheap, especially if you make your own roses. They don't make roses in stores anymore.

For an 8" 2 layer decorated cake I Charge $35.00. All my cakes are made from scratch and my frostings are cooked (except the cream cheese frosting). I'm just not real crazy about buttercream (personal taste). A lot also depends on the area in which you live. I'd call around to different bakeries in your area and find out what they charge. Maybe that will give you a better idea icon_smile.gif But keep in mind that you will be putting a lot of hard work in to that cake and you don't want to sell yourself short.

princess3, do you have a price list for different cake sizes you would be willing to share? What part of KY do you live in?

My bare minimum for ANY paid cake is $30. Doesn't matter what size. You know you're going to put your heart and soul into it. Not to mention the fact that it will be 10x more delicious than what anyone can buy in a grocery store.

It takes literally hours to craft a cake, if you take into account all the time spent: planning the design, shopping for ingredients, mixing the cake, baking the cake, waiting for it to cool, mixing the icing, then decorating and assembling the cake. Then there's cake boards, boxes, colorings, etc.

Even if you're a basic/beginning cake decorator, your time alone should be worth $10/hour. I'd like to see someone who can go start-to-finish, from plan to grocery store to presentation, on one single cake, in less than 3 hours.

I always undercharge for cakes, but I think it more of practice I am a newbie and once I get better I will charge more but for now I just raise the price more on each cake.
Andiesweet always take in to consideration how much you spend on supplies for the cake if your not making money at least try to break even.

You may not want to take any advice from me! I am trying to figure out my wedding cake servings and prices but in general this is what I charge for the rest: Based on two layers and buttercream dream icing. If there is going to be fondant on it I would charge more too:

6" round $20.00 1/4 sheet $$25.00
8" round $25.00 1/3 sheet $ 35.00
10" round $30.00 1/2 sheet $45.00
12" round $35.00 Full sheet $ 65.00
14" round $40.00

Some would think this was too cheap but cakes are not popular here as well. This is what I would be willing to pay if I was on the opposite end of buying them for my family. I want people to keep coming back since it is mostly hobby for me. In the future I may look at changes prices when it becomes a steady income! hope this helps!
