Hi everyone. First I want to say what amazing cakes you all make!! Such talent you ladies have.

Now to my question that has probably been asked a million times icon_redface.gif Can I use the Luster Dust on BC frosting? I'm making my daughter a scrapbook cake for her 1st birthday and I wanted it shimmery like some of yours. If I can how much do I need? It will be the wilton 2 mix pan.

Thank you all so much.

Kim

Hi Kim

I am sure you could use luster dust on BC icing... anything is possible in cake decorating! - can't say I have used it, but if I was, I would wait for the bc to "crust" over and then with a big soft brush - like a makeup brush or soft paint brush, dust it over the cake. Just remember, it will only be most like a muted tone/shimmer if you do it this way. You could try to "rub" it in, but I would experiment before attempting this on a cake for final presentation.

Luster / shimmer dusts are primarily use for fondant/gumpaste etc... but that doesn't mean you can't try!

Maybe someone else out there has used it on bc...

Hope this helps a little

Welcome to CC! Yes, you can use luster dust on BC. It is difficult to put it on dry--the process tends to gum up your brush with BC. Best bet is to mix the luster dust with a clear extract (vanilla or lemon) or vodka, gin or everclear and then paint it on. You can do several coats if needed.

As to how much you need will depend on what you are doing. Are you looking for a shimmer like the luster dust will give you or a nice sparkle (like real glitter). Cakes By Sam has pixie dust which is AWESOME and is just like real glitter. A bunch of my cake in my photos have pixie dust on them--teh daisy cake has pixie dust on it, my daughter's princess crown was pained with clear gold pixie dust and on the disco cake, the disco ball (which is BC BTW) was painted wiht hologram pixie dust. Just another option for you to look into. icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome, I posted a tread on this myself a while back. I was told that you can use the luster dust in powder form on a crusting BC, if you use a very soft brush, they sujested to try a new make-up blush brush....

My brush bristles kept coming out on the cake icon_mad.gif But I did get the shimmer look, hope you have better luck than me... Hope that helps!

Take care

Missy your cakes are amazing!! Thanks for the tip on the pixie dust. I do want to use that also on some of the accents now that I can see what it looks like. thumbs_up.gif
