Will the large sugar crystals or sparkles melt into buttercream? I wanted to do it for a cake the day before but now I'm wondering if I should wait or even do it at all.

I would think you'd be safe. If you want, you could add the sparkles at the last possible moment. I've never had a problem with them melting into the frosting, but my frosting may behave differently than yours. Only by experimenting will you know for sure.

I use them on buttercream all the time on cookies. Never had a problem.

Sparkles do not give me a problem, but colored sugar does. You may want to shake a little on a blob of your icing and let it set for a bit to see if the colors bleed onto your bc. When in doubt, I test it on something other than the real cake. HTH

Be sure to crush up the sparkles in the jar before sprinkling. Otherwise you get a big chunk of plasticy sparkles in your teeth. It's kind of like chewing tinfoil. But it doesn't bother me if it's crushed up and smaller bits...and still looks pretty.
