Cake Decorating Shops In Michigan?
Decorating By beachcakes Updated 30 Jul 2007 , 5:05pm by beachcakes
We're taking a trip to Michigan in a few weeks, and i'm wondering if there are any worthwhile cake decorating shops along our route. Someone that sells fondant/gumpaste tools/molds, etc. - something other than the Wilton stuff I can get at the craft store. We're flying into Chicago, spending a few days around Flint and then heading up to the UP, coming back down through Wisconsin.
Thanks for the help!
I believe there are a few places in the annarbor or detroit area. I would venture to guess you would not find much in the UP. There is one in Muskegon (I have not been to it) but doesnt sound like you will be in that area. Sorry I am not more help.
There is a pretty good store in the Brighton area (about 20 minutes south of flint down OLD US 23) its called The Pantry Shelf. They teach classes there but not Wilton and have a pretty good sized store. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you would like more information.
thanks for the info! ![]()
You're probably right, Merissa, I didn't expect to find much in the UP!! ![]()
well I know of two stores that I really enjoy ... one is located near port huron and it is pretty new and very clean .... the guy that works/runs the place actually was on tv when he went to the oklahoma cake contest ... he has several cakes in his shop that he has worked on .... tons and tons of pans and tons and tons of candy making stuff .... also four to six aisle packed with tons of cake decorating tools/supplies ... I am not sure the name of it but I do know that it is in a plaza called the victorian plaza .. the other store is closer to flint in a city called swartz creek ... this one is called Lovegroves .. she has a ton of cake/candy supplies .. it is a little bit of an older store and the walkways are pretty narrow but that just means shes's packing the shop well! she has a whole wall full of plastic do-dad's for the tops of cakes and a ton of sugar candy decorations for cakes as well .... those are the only two I know of so far ... actually, come to think of it there is one just outside of flint off of Saginaw Road .. but its REALLY small and what I would consider a "rougher" part of the city so I have only been there maybe two times .... hope that helps!
I'm in Monroe (about 20 miles north of Toledo) and we have a store called "The Flour Garden." It's not very big (has those same cramped narrow aisles the cakerator was talking about
),but it does have some pretty good stuff. There aren't a lot of fondant tools or anything, just like smoothers and cutters and stuff. I love the store though, it has met all my needs so far. It's a family run business I think, and the people are SO nice and helpful.
We also have Crafts 2000, they have a lot of molds for candy. I don't know about them having fondant tools though, I haven't seen any there.
Lol, yeah I don't think you'll find anything in the UP. Just a two lane highway and trees.
It's so beautiful though, I hope you all have fun!
thanks bigsis! Seem to be alot of Michiganders on this site
DH's family is gathering in Marquette. I love it up there! I have still to see a moose! ![]()
I''m so glad I live in Ann Arbor. BUT there isn't anything around here but JoAnns...lol
There is a neat store in Saline called The Bakers Nook, I go there alot, they have EVERYTHING, they sell all the tools, and mixes for gumpaste and everything. They carry Americolor and that other brand can't think of the name......CK? And the people are SO helpful and nice. Not to mention they sell chocolate turtles that I can't keep away from...
. It's worth a detour if you come through here at all. The store is real small, but MAN did they pack it in there!
Thx Mizshelli! Now I have to plot all these on a map! Boy, is DH gonna be surprised! ![]()
