I colored some MMF with Americolor Regal Purple on yesterday. I wrapped it up and put it in an air tight container. Today, I took it out, rolled it out and cut out some circles and letters and a #1 for a cake I am making for Saturday. Everything was going great - really too good for me. I left the house to go to a wedding cake class for a couple hours. When I got back, all of the things I had cut were blue - not purple. Any ideas of what happened? Does MMF get lighter when it dries/gets hard? I really need for this stuff to be purple on Saturday.

I'm not sure why that happened, but you could mix some color with vanilla and paint it purple.
I'm sorry I couldn't help more!

I know that acidity can cause purple food coloring to turn blue, but I don't think that MMF would have a particularly unusual pH.

Did you by any chance leave it out in bright light, especially sunlight? That can cause fading, and the fading can be greatest for one specific pigment, in this case red.

Another idea for returning the pieces you made to their original purple splendor is to mix purple petal or luster dust with lemon extract/everclear/vodka and paint the pieces purple. The sparkly look might even enhance the cake.

I've noticed that "Regal Purple" has very much a blue color to it. I have that color as well and it really doesn't come out very purply (not sure this is a word).

If you look at the Bath tub cake in my photos, you will see the color of the wash cloth on top. That is what my Regal Purple came out as.

Redpanda - You hit in right on the head. I left the pieces on my dining room table in direct sunlight...Augh!!!! I can't believe I did that. I like the luster dust idea. Maybe I can save them. If not I will do them in white and try to put purple accents on them...

I'll post a picture of the finished cake on Saturday.

Thanks for the responses.
