My Cake Fell Apart... And Hit The Floor... Yikes

There are 2 pictures of this bad boy in my photos.
I made a cactus in a teracota pot. It fell apart and yes, hit the floor with a thud. hehehe oh gosh. So, I know how to make the construction part so it won't fall apart in the future but I wasn't terribly concerned, was in a hurry with a 1 and 3 year old at my feet, and it was just for family. Anyway,I made the Alternative marshmellow fondant and it was not at all like the wilton fondant, it just creased and there was so certainly no smoothing it. I can cover a cake well with wilton fondant.. but I'm looking for something I can make at home that tastes good and works well and will smooth. Also, this stuff kinda slid down the cake.. do you know what causes that?? Can I get help with that??
And a small vent: Since I got offered a job to make custom cakes for a catoring company and small restaurant my family expects glorious cakes from me. (As if a job offer sends magic helper fairies) And the thing is, I like doing it and I want to learn more, but it's just a freakin cake to me... but they just were almost like I'd let them down cause my cake was not perfect. And you know, it's not my dream to be a cake decorator. It's a hobby, not a dream, and shoot it's how I learn to do it better is to make mistakes. It takes a lot of time and with my small ones I don't want to obligate myself to cakes when I want to be with them. ARGH. I will always make decisions that are best for my family but it's frustrating how many feelings they have over this....
I am sorry you had problems with your cake. I made MMF once and it was horrible to work with. I gave up and went to Satin Ice.
Now, may I ask, did you make your pot in a terra cotta pot or did you carve it? I want to try this but am not sure which way to do it. Thanks.
next time they ask for an edible masterpiece, hand em' a cookbook and say " have at it! "
i'm sorry the cake broke, but glad that you have a good attitude about that part !
as far as the mmf, sorry, i dont like it either. i buy satin ice in 20 lb buckets from www.intotheoven.com for 49.95 and pay 11 to ship it. so it works out to be $3 a lb. not all that much more expensive than making mmf. mmf is about 1.50 per pound to make BUT it takes your time and is not always consistant. satin ice can be rolled MUCH thinner and so it goes twice as long. so in the long run, its a way better deal. save that extra twenty minutes per batch for the kiddos.
your post is ominous to me, i have a cake upstairs right now that is wrapped in a "girdle" or sorts. (freezer bags cut into long strips taped around the cake) i am terrified the thing is going to fall apart (it did once while i was doing my crumb coat. i'm hoping that the fondant and the "girdle" hold it together.
as for family, i totally understand it. in my case it seems like the family is always waiting to see what i'll do next, they are excited. i assume that it is the same for you. i am busy this week with 2 cakes and my husband's birthday just happened to be yesterday, when i told him i was going to buy him an ice cream cake this weekend he looked offended, so i of course had to whip something up, hence the baseball cap cake in my photos. i suppose we should be grateful that our families are supportive and just ignore what ever we need to keep our sanity.
as for the 1 and 3 year old, i hear ya there. i have a 3& 4 year old and 7month old. my big ones make cakes with me out of blocks and toys. it's funny when a 4 year old wants to stay up late just to watch a foodnetwork cake challenge and knows all about fondant. good luck and remember the vodka isn't just for cakes! ![]()

I have the same problem, when will the darling one get it, that for some of us it is just a hobby, not our life long ambition to own a cake shop. ![]()
I have 9 children, the youngest ones being 1 & 2 1/2, the others are from 10 to 22. ![]()
I love making and decorating cakes in my spare time
, but the 'other half' just doesnt understand why I dont want to go into business. ![]()
And now just to put the icing on the cake
, he has his work collegues saying the same thing to me. I agreed to make all there cakes for the birthdays in the office for the cost of the ingredients. BIGGEST mistake I made, I had EVERYONE, including the CEO ringing and emailing compliements to me (dont mind that ![]()
) but then 5 of them wanted to book cakes for the next month!!!!!! ![]()

Then to top it off, he came home last night with a present for me
............ A business plan for a cake shop!!!!!

It may not seem much to some of you, but 9 children, 3 step children, social activities for all, church and the fact that I am studying law also, really keeps me on my toes.
So I completely understant.......... havnt figured out the solution yet...........but you are not alone in feeling this way.
I love making and decorating cakes in my spare time

I have a friend who seems to think that I can do magic. Poof here you go another Mona Lisa. I've only been decorating for about a year and everyone seems to think that they can ask for something extrodinary in a cake, and it will just magically appear. My best friend and byfriend are also insisting its time to start making money from this wonderful hobby, go into business, again just like magic, I'll wake up tomorrow and find a bakery with my name on it and customers lining up at the door. Keep telling everyone that I know as soon as I start taking money for my cakes I will lose my passion for making them. Right now I get to decorate because I love to do it, don't want to decorate because I have to do it.
As far as fondant I have never used the remade stuff so I'm pretty much in the dark. I've only used the mmf and maybe I should keep the "blinders" on because I know the other stuff can get pretty expensive.
