Hey guys! I am glad I found this place, as I have always been interested in learning the techniques of cake decorating. My son is turning one, and we are doing his party on 07/02/05. Since I am still so new at this, \\I am not even attempting to bake the cake myself just yet, well that and too little time actually, but anywho, I am getting a plain white sheet cake and a plain white smash cake for him. I am using the "around town" theme for him, which is a firetruck, a dumptruck, and a train. I am going really for the construction aspect of the whole thing. I was thinking....could I do a copy of a part of the pattern, and punch needle holes throought that pattern, simply lay it on top of the cake, and perhaps put cocoa on top of the pattern, and gently push it through the holes to give me somewhat of a pattern to go by? I am a fairly good a  ist, but I am afraid that with this, I would completly mess it up. I am attaching a file to show you what the pattern is...I am actually using the Beep, Honk, and Chug emblems. Any replay would be helpful, or any other EASIER suggestions!! thumbs_up.gif

You could do a buttercream transfer or as we call them on here BCT. I'm sure that'd work for this .. or reverse your picture, use a clear piping gel to outline and then fill in with a smaller size star tip.

ntertayneme is right.... a BCT would probably be the easiest to do, but here is a question I always like asking parents.... is the cake for the baby or the parents ego? Not to knock the ego because my oldest daughters birthday cake consisted of Winnie the Pooh and 5 sattelite cakes decorated as balloons in different flavors (definately EGO!). However, whatever you do, don't stress over it. Just have fun with your first cake!

I would definitely do a BCT...that would be the easiest way to go. Here is the tutorial if you don't know how they are done... http://www.cakecentral.com/article12-How-To-Create-a-Frozen-Buttercream-Transfer.html

Well, I got myself into quite the situation there. I started out for me of course because what 1 year old cares about cake. Now my kids are cake connoisseurs! No plain sheet cake for birthday parties around here! LOL

Thanks for the info guys, and thanks bunches for the tutorial. I will most definitly look into it tonight....and you are right about the ego!! I am your typical mother...just want it to be special, not only for me but for him to see when he gets older! If it turns out okay, I will post a pic in the gallery. If you think I am stressing about the cake....I actually HAND DREW a 21 page activity booklet for the kids. I also hand drew a "pin the wheel on the dumptruck". I enlarged the picture of the dumptruck from the pattern!! I also did personalized street and traffic signs to hang up...you wanna talk about anal!! I am sure as he gets older, it will only get worse!! Again, I appreciate the input!

Have fun with it - even if he won't remember, you will! I used to go all out for birthday parties, but when my son turned 4, he wanted a pizza party at a bowling alley, complete with *shudder* ice cream cake!!! It's been downhill from there... icon_eek.gif You'll do great! Post a picture icon_biggrin.gif

I realize its too late now for suggestions but I traced a dinosaur (for my daughter's 3rd birthday) using piping gel on parchment paper, laid it on the cake and then traced it again with black icing and filled it with stars. It came out pretty well for my first try. See the photo I have posted.

I hope the cakes turned out and that you are happy with the results. First birthdays only happen once!!
