Yesterday I had a text from my DH's friend's GF asking me to make a cake for her brothers birthday, and that she would pay me. I asked when it was for, she said 'Saturday' and I was very strong, I said Sorry, can't do it, only because I have two orders due on Saturday.

But here's the thing. I said "I can't do it, but if you want to come around and do it yourself, and keep me company while I do my two, I will help you if I can'. I have a big kitchen, so sometimes I do this with friends.
We have now shared about 30 texts about this. I told her yesterday, this is your first cake, try something simple. I emailed her a couple of easy-ish ideas. But she has decided on a 'threesome' cake, I'm picturing Debbie Brown's Naughty Cakes. So I say fine, but warning I won't be able to do much, just give tips and refill her wine glass! I reminded her to keep her design simple. She replied ' are people hard?' I said yes, and they take some time, because you want them to look like people!
She has just texted me to say she is going to the supermarket, what should she buy. I replied 'icing sugar, fondant, a cake, colourings, candles, cake board etc'. I was also thinking 'gum tragacanth' sugar glue, lustre dusts etc but didn't ask her to try and track those down! She replied 'what is fondant?'

I don't want to be mean or brush her off, she is a sweet girl (only 19) and so wants to please her mother and brother, she is also the girlfriend of a friend. And I also don't want to discourage her or let her think I can't be bothered helping! But I am going to be completely tied up with my two orders, after working at my day job until 5, and she has no idea about how to do this! I think she's one of those 'it's only cake' people and she is in for a rude shock! Or am I underestimating her? I guess I will find out tomorrow night!

As long as you guys have a good time, it could be kinda interesting to see what she comes up with. icon_smile.gif I've helped my niece make a cake... got the bags ready and let her do what she wants.. and it was sweet to see how proud of it she was, her mom thought it was so sweet she took it to her work to show off. You see, they loved it, but "technically".. well.. it was interesting.. icon_lol.gif

Yes you're right, the main aim is to have fun together. She came around and borrowed my Debbie Brown Naughty cakes book to copy the figures from. We had a bit of a chat, she isn't expecting her cake to look like anything out of the book and is just hoping to make her brother and mum happy. It will be very interesting to see how this goes, I will be sure to post pics!

What I cant get out of my mind is that she is making a 3some cake for her brother and her MOM is going to be there! IS SHE NUTS I would kill my daughter if she showed up with that kind of cake for my son! Maybe im just a prude but comeon now!! lol If it was an all adult party that would be different Im not against those cakes but when you throw MOMS in the picture it just makes it not right.

I gotta agree with the person who was slightly skeeved at the thought of a threesome cake for a party the mom will be at... icon_surprised.gif
My parents would die of apoplexy if I showed up somewhere with a cake like that... but I guess it takes all kinds, lol.

Oh man, I did this for Father's day, invited my mom and my brother's girlfriend over to decorate their cake while I decorated one for hubby's co-worker. I was concentrating on what I was doing and wasn't watching them to see if they were following my directions. Long story short, mom's mixer is 100 yrs old and can't handle frosting, they overmixed the frosting, forgot to leave some out to make different colors, etc. you get the idea. The cake didn't look too bad but it would have looked better if I had given them my FULL attention.
