I went to Hobby Lobby (Monday) to buy some supplies for cupcake bouquets and I bought the package of 2 styrofoam 4" balls. They were $3.47 but I had a 40% off coupon so my total with tax was $2.21, so for 4 - 1/2 balls (that I cut in half) that is only .55 each. I thought that was pretty good.

I went to another Hobby Lobby today and I picked up another bag with my 40% coupon in hand and to my surprise that package said $2.47. I looked again and most all the other packages said $3.47. I was shocked! Then I went to another part of the store and they had Christmas crafts put out and there were packages of 2 - 4" balls for $3.99! I couldn't believe it. I double checked and sure enough 2 - 4" balls. I don't remember if the packaging was the same or not. That is not right, just because it is a Christmas craft they cost more.

I have to go back Friday and I am going to see if I can find any more packages that say $2.47 and I will have another coupon with me.

You are right ladefly, I got a great deal yesterday but I don't understand the mark-up. First of all, a $1 for the regular craft foamballs. From $2.47 to $3.47? That is a huge mark-up. I have seen mark-up in my milk and bread at the store, but not that much.

Then how can they justify selling the same thing in the Christmas section for even more money? If I don't forget, I will double check Friday and see if it is the same company who manufactors that balls.

I sure wish you had a Hobby Lobby, they are great. My sister has never been to one and she is going tomorrow. I told her she could spend a lot of time in there.

All in all, I find the foam ball thing a bit pricey for what it is...c'mon. it's just a piece of foam! I've started saving the styrofoam from packaging I receive here and there and then just cutting that to fill up the container I'm using. Then I cover it with press and seal and then use the decorative cover (moss like shredding or whatever) and then arrange my picks into it.

They cost so much because they are made from petroleum-based products! Same for your plastics. It's not only at the gas pump that the wallet takes a beating.

GeminiRJ,

Thank you for the insight and or reminder about the styrofoam being petroleum based.

Wow!! Good for you in finding such a great deal!! We don't have a Hobby Lobby around here. I'm not sure...are they in Canada at all?
