Mine is sweet... but it is a big hit. the extra flavorings cut some of the sweetness I think...

2 cups CRISCO
2 tsp clear vanilla (or regular if you are going to color it)
2 tsp clear butter flavor
2 tsp clear almond flavor
2 lbs p. sugar
2 tbsp meringue powder
water

I use the Wilton class recipe for my cakes but I add in about a teaspoon of popcorn salt to cut down on the sweetness--a pinch that the recipe calls for is just not enough.

I use one that is 1/2 shortening and 1/2 salted butter (the salt cuts down the sweet) its still sweet but in my opinon tons better....

1/2 cup salted butter (important to let this warm up a bit out of the fridge or else its hard to cream)
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
5 cups sifted (before measuring) powdered sugar
2 TBS Heavy Whipping Cream
Milk to thin

cream first the butter until its nice and soft, add shortening and cream well together add vanilla....then add PS one cup at at time, it is going to look really really dry...then add 2 TBS heavy whipping cream....now its stiff enough for Roses, buttercream dams etc.....but in order to ice with it I add another 1 -2 Tablespoons of milk until I get it where I want it....

By the way this is a crusting buttercream and is ok to leave out of the fridge for 2-3 days ( I guess the sugar keeps the cream and milk from going bad)...

Might make a 1/2 batch or something to see if you like it first.
