Icing A Cake With Royal Icing

Does anyone do ths? I often times see instructions in cake decorating books on how to frost a cake with royal icing. Seems like once the RI hardens, it would crack alot whenever the cake is cut.

Good question because I see this in all my cake books also. I would think one would only do this for competitions (?). They sure look nice but would never want to serve one.

I ice my cake dummies in royal because it does dry rock hard. On cakes meant to be eaten, I only use royal for decorations.
