I need to make two large cakes for a college graduation party but I didn't want to layer two together to make it larger... If I make two batters in one 13x9 sheet pan how long do I leave it in for and is that recommended? I just don't think I have the time or extra icing to layer them. Plus I just thought I might like making one big single cake instead of layering them. Thank you.
Also the only reason I'm making them in these pans is because this is what they asked for instead of rounds. So I'm not too familiar with baking times for the sheet and especially for two batters in one pan... If I can even do that without messing it up.
I have baked two cake mixes in a 9 x 13 pan. I just used a flower nail in the middle and put the temp at 325. It was a thick size and I didn't need to add another layer on top. HTH!!! ![]()
Are you asking about making two 9 x 13 cakes and putting them together side by side, to make an 18 x 13 cake? If so, I have done that many times. If you make the layers relatively tall (mine usually rise up above the pan lip, and then I level them to a bit over 2 inches tall.
Baking time will depend on recipe and oven temperature, but mine take anywhere from a little under an hour to an hour and a quarter at 325. (I use a lower oven temperature than the recipe calls for, and have never used a heating core/flower nail. I do use bake-even strips around the pan, though.)
By two batters in one pan, are you referring to a double recipe of batter or two different types of batter?
Oh and about time, I put it in at 325 for 40 minutes and it still needed a few more minutes. I just kept on peeking in on it after that, didn't want it to burn!!
Okay, I'm totally confused.
What are you trying to do? It sounds like you want to do two sheet cakes versus two layered cakes, and you want the sheet cakes to be two different flavors each??? Is that correct?
Doing two different flavors at one time is easy, but I tend to toss out the clock and by by look and the toothpick test. If you're using box cakes, there's not a lot of difference in cooking times between flavors. Hope this helps and I didn't confuse things even more. ![]()

Ohhhh! I got it now. That was a "duh" moment for me. Okay, so if you use enough batter to fill the pan 3/4 full then you'll end up with a taller cake. But if you decise to go ahead and fill, you can still slice the 9x13 in half and fill and the cake will be much taller. If you use two batters, though, you'll have enough left over for cupcakes. ![]()
