I would love to try some cookie decorating, but Im not really fond of "plain" cookies. Or hard cookies. Mainly I like chewy chocolate chip type cookies, is it possible to decorate this type, or will it only really work if I go for an NFSC type thing?
Thanks for any help.

As long as your cookies have a nice flat surface, you could decorate on anything. The problems you might run into iare 1. having them fall apart on you if they're too soft, and 2. getting the shapes you want from a softer cookie. The softer cookies tend to spread more, and would be hard to roll out and cut.

I have a chocolate chip cutout recipe on my site that works well for decorating. It's not quite as soft as traditional chocolate chip cookies, but it's a decent compromise. You have to use the mini-chips though so that you can cut the dough without the big chips getting in the way. You might try it.

There some other recipes on there that you might try, too, that aren't quite as "plain" as sugar cookies.

I detest any cookie that has a 'crunch' to it. My NFSC cookies are firm enough to decorate yet still nice and soft in the center.

I've used the chocolate chip roll-out recipe from KarensCookies and I can't say enough good things about it. It tastes very good (even without icing) and there is virtually no spread to the cookies. I would highly recommend it.

I recently made the Chocolate Sugar Cookies (from this site) and used the MMF recipe from this site, and both the cookie and the MMF together was perfect!! I got rave reviews.

One note about this though. I used the same cookie cutter for both the cookie and the MMF, and I have about a quarter inch difference around the edge of the cookie, because of the expansion of the cookie...

I know you said chocolate chip, but I mention this cookie because these taste like doiuble chocolate chip cookies, without the chips.

I decorate hundreds of soft gingerbread cookies each year, they work just fine.
