Are these the oils you find that people put in their homemade hard candy that sometimes you find in the endcaps at Wal Mart or other big grocery stores or are they just ordered online?

Yes they are If you are talking about a tiny little bottle about 1 1/2 inches tall. The side of the bottle says Lorann gourmet and the front has the flavor. It makes my rolled buttercream taste yummy.

You can find them at your local cake supply stores if you don't want to order online. The store I go to has tons of them. icon_biggrin.gif

thank you fmcmulle! I wish I had a local cake supply store (we'd be more broke then we are now icon_sad.gif ) , but the nearest is 75 miles away icon_sad.gif . But I have seen these little bottles of oils on the endcaps in Wal Mart at the holidays, maybe they have them now and I just haven't noticed them?!?

i usually get my lorann oils at our local cake supply store. They are about $1.40 there....i went a little crazy last time and almost got one of each flavor....oh well...more for me to expieriment with. But you can still get them online, just google lorann oils and you should get some sites that sell them.

wgoat5,

Not sure where in Kentucky you are, but I was visiting a friend out in Madisonville, and we went into Rural King (don't remember why) and lo and behold - they had a small cake decorating section and they some of the lorann oils.....mostly fruity flavors I believe but not sure. If you have a Rural King near you I would look there!

I've found a bigger selection @ AC Moore. Micheal's & Hobby Lobby have a few flavors. I've even seen it @ WalGreens! I have a few cake supply stores near by that have the best selection.
Most of the flavors are fruity, however there are other flavors as well: coffee, amaretto, butter rum, coconut, peppermint, ect. ect.... The flavors are very concentrated, so add a little @ a time. I use a dropper with mine.
I've used it to flavor my cake, icing, & fondant. (Coffee is great with choc!)

I'd also like to know how much. I plan on using some raspberry to flavor fondant for a cake this weekend. I also might add some to my buttercream to which I'm adding raspberry puree. How many drops do you think to start?

It really depends on how strong of a flavor that you want & how many cups your bc/fondant recipe yields. I don't have a particular amt of drops that I use, I just add a few drops @ a time until the taste is right. It's just a matter of taste. For example, I don't really like a stong lemon taste, but just a few drops gives it a nice "light" lemon taste.
The first time that I used raspberry in my bc, I added too much & had to make more bc to "dilute" the flavor (@ that time I was pouring it from the bottle).
It may be a good idea to keep a little list of the flavors & the amt. you used so you won't have to sample it so often. Maybe I should follow my own advice, but what fun would that be?
